FODMAPs is an abbreviation for types of carbohydrate which are poorly absorbed and causes symptoms in people with IBS. The full name is Fermentable Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides, And Polyols. The low FODMAP diet has three stages which are detailed below in the 'What's Involved?' section.

What is IBS?
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a collection of gut symptoms that's not explained by any other disease. It's thought to mainly 30-50 year old women. IBS symptoms will come and go over your life-course, and tend to be worse during the working week, than the weekend.
Diagnosis
To be diagnosed with IBS your symptoms must have started at least 6 months before diagnosis, and be present for the last 3 months. The symptom criteria below is diagnostic of IBS, but you may also have excess wind, lethargy, backache, nausea, bladder symptoms.
Rome IV IBS diagnostic criteria:

Abdominal pain or discomfort that is either relieved by opening the bowels or
-
Linked to opening the bowels more/less often or
-
Linked to a change in stool type, either constipation or diarrhoea or both
1 of the above for at least 6 months with 2+ of the following

Straining, urgent need for the toilet, incomplete evacuation

Abdominal Bloating, tension or hardness
-
Symptoms made worse by eating

Passage of mucus with bowel movements
Causes
The causes are not fully understood, but some causes are thought to be: Stress, Anxiety, depression & mood disturb how your intestines function. 50% of people with IBS suffer from anxiety or depression. Other causes are hormonal events, previous gastroenteritis, and altered gut bacteria
What's Involved?

4 x one hour video or in person consultations, guiding you through 1st line advice, then each of the 3 stages of the low FODMAP diet

1st line advice involves changes for common symptom causing food substances

You’ll receive expert assistance through each stage of the low FODMAP diet. The first stage will involve restricting the wide range of foods high in FODMAPs for 4-6 weeks, we will then reintroduced them slowly, using a method which allows us to identify exactly which of them are causing your symptoms and in what quantities. Finally we will reincorporate the tolerated FODMAPs back into your diet ensuring nutritional balance.
